Population Models Project

Welcome to the Population Models Project! Use the link below to help in your research.

Objective: Pick two countries and make comparisons for their overall populations and growth rates. You will investigate their populations for a period of ten years, find the average growth rate, and make estimations of future populations.

Directions:

1) Go to the CIA World Factbookand pick two countries that you would like to investigate further. Under the link "People" you can find the estimated populations for 2012. Write each population in millions. (Ex: US Population = 309,975,000 but would be written as 309.975 million; only use three decimal places)

2) Find the average growth rate for each country. Explain what this number means in terms of the population growth for each. Also at the CIA World Factbook under the link "People" you can find the population growth rates of each country.

3) Using the 2012 population as your starting population, write Now-Next equations for each country that would model the population growth.

4) Using the Now-Next equations above, estimate the populations for each country for the next ten years (2012-2022). This information should be displayed neatly in a table.

5) Use this information to make a plot over time for each country. You can make two separate scatterplots or include both countries on one. If you make only one graph, be sure to change the mark (or color) on the graph and include a key so you can distinguish between the two countries.

6) Write a paragraph comparing the two countries. Be sure to include comparisons for the original populations, growth rates, and possible reasons the growth rates are as high/low as they are. (You may need to do a little research on your countries to find this answer.)

7) All the information should be included (in order) on a Word document and should be printed out and handed in. See Mrs. Dugan or Mr. Nelms with questions if you have them.

Grading Criteria: Your project will be graded on the following criteria. All parts should be included and projects should be neat and organized. You can complete them in any format (Document: Word, Pages, Google Docs, etc. / Tables: Excel, Google Docs, etc.)
