We will be working on a project to analyze how well baseball players performed over a ten year period of their career. You will need to use what you know about statistics to chart the progress of six players and decide which of the players had the better career and when that player had his best year. We will be using Microsoft Excel to make several graphs and will be using those graphs to make our final analysis of the player's performance.
Use the links below to help you organize and gather your information:
Baseball Statistics: This link will take you to the Yahoo! Sports Major League Baseball page. I will assign you a team and you will need to click on Teams then your assigned team then Roster. Check to see which players have been in the league for at least nine years (from 1998-2007) and choose three pitchers and three fielders. Click on the player's name then on Career Stats. You can copy and paste the entire table of information into an Excel worksheet and then pick and choose which parts you want. We'll be reviewing how to use Microsoft Excel before you do this so you will all be experts! Please see me with questions if you have them.
Statistics Proj⦠Guidelines.doc: Here is an electronic copy of the guidelines for our MLB Stat project. Please read this carefully so you know what is expected of you. This project will count as a test grade and will be recorded in the third marking period.
Player Performance Spreadsheet: Here is a spreadsheet to help you organize your players and determine when they had their overall best and worst years. You will need this information to answer questions for your project. This component will be a major part of your grade. (This sheet will be updated before you start your project.)
MLBStatProjRubric.xls: This is the rubric that will be used when grading your project. Please make sure to review this sheet as you go so you know everything that is expected of you. Each graph is worth three points. You will be graded on accuracy, labels, and appearance. Make sure when you are answers questions about the players worst and best years that you look at the graphs to help you! That's the whole point of making the graphs! Don't forget to answer these and all questions in a Word document. This will be submitted along with your Excel documents.
